You’ve been training hard for your upcoming boxing match and you’re in the best shape of your life. You’ve got your game plan all mapped out and you know exactly what you need to do to win. There’s just one problem: you’re not sure what to eat before the big event.
What you eat before a boxing match can have a major impact on your performance. Eating the wrong foods can leave you feeling sluggish, bloated, and low on energy. On the other hand, eating the right foods can give you the boost you need to go toe-to-toe with your opponent and come out on top. So, what should you eat—and more importantly, what should you avoid? 1. Avoid processed foods.
Processed foods are loaded with sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats that can wreak havoc on your body—and your boxing performance. Stay away from sugary snacks like candy bars and cake, as well as salty junk food like chips and pretzels. These types of foods will only make you feel sluggish and weighed down when it’s time to step into the ring.
2. Don’t overeat.
It’s important to have a hearty meal before a big event like a boxing match, but that doesn’t mean you should stuff yourself until you’re ready to burst at the seams. Overeating will only make you feel sluggish and slow down your reflexes when it’s time to fight. Stick to smaller meals that are easy on your stomach so you’ll be able to move quickly and easily when the bell rings.
3. Avoid greasy foods.
Greasy foods like French fries, hamburgers, and pizza might sound tempting, but they’re not going to do you any favors come fight night. These types of foods will sit heavy in your stomach, making it hard to move around the ring with speed and agility. Stick to leaner protein sources like grilled chicken or fish instead.
4. Don’t drink alcohol before the match.
You might be tempted to have a beer or two before the big event to help calm your nerves, but alcohol is only going to dehydrate you and make it harder for your body to perform at its best. Save the celebratory drinks for after the match—you’ll be glad you did when you’re crowned champion!

Should I eat before or after boxing? Boxers should plan a meal around two (2) or three (3) hours before boxing. This gives the body enough time to begin the digestion process. After around 2-3 hours, the energy in the carbohydrates is released, giving boxers increased stamina needed for longer workouts.
What do boxers eat after a workout?

A boxer’s diet should be similar to the Paleo diet or the low glycaemic diet and should include protein in every meal, such as red meat, eggs, poultry or oily fish, plus healthy fats like avocado and nuts, fruit and vegetables for fibre, vitamins and nutrients and slow release carbs such as whole grains or oats.
